Shannon, throughout her life, had wanted to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. However, after high school she enrolled in BYU to start her Pharmacy undergraduate studies and as she started preparing for graduate school the opportunity to serve a mission at age 21 seemed more and more unlikely as she hoped to be in grad school at that time. She decided that she would do a study abroad semester in Madrid, Spain to fill the spot of a mission for the time being. In the October 2012 General Conference, President Monson announced that the age for Sister Missionaries was changing from 21 to 19. Shannon cancelled her study abroad and less than 3 weeks later received her mission call to Barcelona, Spain.
